New Members of the Texture Design Team!

We have two new interns starting this week! I'm pretty sure Texture Design won the jackpot on interns! Elise and Abby go to the College of Charleston and are so lovely to be around! This week they interviewed each other in order for you to get to know a little more about them! In the coming weeks you'll be hearing lots more from them!

Get to know Elise!

AT: You're fairly new to Charleston. Where are you originally from, and what brought you to the city?
EB: I am originally from Grosse Pointe, Michigan which is a small suburb right outside of Detroit. When I was applying to schools I loved the idea of getting out of my comfort zone and trying something new and Charleston seemed like the perfect place to do that.

AT: What is your favorite thing about living in the Holy City so far?
EB: There is so much to love, but I am a huge fan of the atmosphere and the weather. Having access to so many amazing stores and restaurants that are all within a few blocks of me is amazing. I also love how kind and friendly people are here. A big plus is the weather!  Back home in Michigan it is freezing right now so having a nice 75 degree day in October is amazing! Oh and having the beach so close isn’t bad either!

AT: Do you know what you're planning to study at the College of Charleston?
EB: As of now, I plan on majoring in Marketing. I am hoping to work with fashion and media once I graduate, but I also am very interested in potentially minoring in real estate and doing something with that eventually.

AT: Any books/movies/music you're especially loving these days?
EB: I just finished reading The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories by Marina Keegan, and absolutely loved it. Marina was a writer who graduated from Yale in 2012, but was killed in a car accident just five days later. The book is a compilation of all the essays she wrote and they encompass all sorts of topics that young adults face and will have to face someday. I thought it was the perfect thing to read in the beginning of college, and I highly, highly recommend it.

AT: What's something you're excited or passionate about right now?
EB: Traveling and exploring. I have loved getting to run around Charleston every weekend and learning about the history of it and experiencing all it has to offer. Moving here has made me realize how many cool things there are in the world and how it is so easy to miss them. I’m working towards hopefully going overseas sometime soon and eventually studying abroad.

AT: What are you most excited about in working with Texture Design Co.?
EB: I am really excited to learn more about the world of marketing and also about running a business. I think it is going to be an awesome way to explore different fields of business and hopefully find something that I am passionate about. I am very grateful for the opportunity!

Get to know Abby!

EB: Where are you from and what drew you to Charleston when you were looking at schools?
AT: I am originally from Naples, Florida, where I lived all my life until moving to Charleston for school. My dad was actually born in Charleston, and many of my relatives still live here, so I grew up visiting the city pretty frequently. I fell in love with this place at a young age, and have had my heart set on someday living here since I was about twelve years old. When I started looking for schools, the College of Charleston seemed like the perfect choice!

EB: You’re an English Major, is there anything specific that you hope to do with that once you graduate?
AT: I have always loved reading and writing, so declaring a major that allows me to study things that I really enjoy has been a huge game-changer for me. There is definitely a cliche attached to English majors that implies impracticality, but I think there are more opportunities out there than people may realize. In an ideal world, I would love to continue writing as a career, be it in the publishing world, with journalism, blogging, or otherwise.

EB: Are you involved in any activities around town?
AT: I am super involved with an organization called Young Life, which is a relational ministry for high school kids. I am a leader for kids at Bishop England High School, so I spend a ton of time meeting and hanging out with them - it’s something I’m more passionate about than almost anything. I am also currently working with South of Broad Living magazine, writing a monthly food column where I review up-and-coming restaurants in the city. As you can imagine, a job that combines eating and writing is a dream come true!

EB: What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?
AT: Oh man, that’s a tough question. I think right now I would have to say Leon’s Oyster Shop - any place that offers fried brussels sprouts, incredible seafood and soft serve ice cream with rainbow sprinkles on the same menu is definitely high on my list.

EB: What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?
AT: People might be surprised to know that I am something of a closet musician - I love singing and playing guitar, although I haven’t gotten to do it nearly as often as I used to since being in college. My younger brother and sister are super musically talented as well, so it’s always so much fun to jam together when we’re all home in Florida!

EB: What are you most excited about in working with Texture Design Co.?
AT: I am very excited to see the ins and outs of running a small, creative business up close, and also for the opportunity to gain more experience with blogging. I am also looking forward to learning from Emily! She has created a really beautiful shop and company, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.
