3 Tips for Designing a Charleston Inspired Room

3 Tips for Designing a Charleston Inspired Room

Cobblestone streets, stunning architecture, waterfront views and perfectly designed flower boxes…what’s not to love about Charleston!? I’m lucky enough to call this dreamy city home. Although I’ve lived here for 12 years, the sweeping beauty still amazes me. Every time I stroll downtown after restocking my favorite local shops with our products, I find something new that inspires me.

If you’ve ever visited the Lowcountry, chances are you’ve fallen in love and wanted to find any way possible to bring that “Charleston feeling” home with you. Today, you can! I’m sharing some of my favorite tips and products for bringing southern charm into your own home, no matter where you live.

Let’s get started…

1. Add a Little Texture

If you’ve been around here for more than a minute, you already know my love for texture. ;) My favorite way to bring that cozy, welcome-to-the-South feeling into a room is by using natural textures like rattan, upholstery, caning, or unfinished wood. It instantly sets the tone for that relaxing, beachy vibe.

Here are some of our favorite products that pack the punch when it comes to adding texture:

Mixed Material Bed | Rattan Wrapped Mirror

2. Color is Your Friend

We all love those perfectly neutral homes all over Instagram (guilty as charged), but if there is one thing that screams Charleston, it’s pastel colors. As a rule of thumb, start with a neutral base and try not to select more than three complementing colors. In this case, we used pale pink and light blue. Cheerful, bright, and easy on the eyes…just like you’re strolling down Rainbow Row on a sunny day.

When it comes to adding Charleston-inspired color, we know what’s up (just look at our Sherbet Painted Streets collection!). Full disclosure that this entire room was designed around two of our best-selling Flower Box Prints.

Here are our favorite ways to add a splash of color into your space:

Pink House Print | White House Print | Pink Lamp

3. Create Interest with Patterns

Charleston is a lot of things…and boring is not one of them. Infuse your space with life by using fun and exciting patterns. Stay with your desired color palette to create cohesion in the space, and be sure that the patterns don’t compete for attention. Create visual balance by keeping some patterns on the simple side, but don’t be afraid to break the rules a little!

Here are some patterns that make us happy:
