Small House Living: Shared Nursery + Home Office

Our backstory: My husband, Martin, and I bought our 3 bedroom, 1 bath 1940's cottage in 2016. At the time I had a shop on King Street in downtown Charleston selling my stationery designs. Immediately after closing on our house, we found out that we were expecting our first child. Martin's home office became her nursery. Right before our daughter was born, I closed the King Street shop and transformed the 3rd bedroom into my home office. I found it an exciting challenge making our 1000 sq ft house fit our needs. A year later, my husband changed jobs to one where he worked from home. Initially we shared my office, but we knew that wouldn't last long. The only space solution we could come up with was turning our dilapidated shed into an office/guest room with another bathroom. The updated shed became a huge asset for our home.

At this point we were surprised to find out we were expecting our second child! And so began our latest project...turning my office into a shared space with our son's nursery not knowing a pandemic was on the horizon.

Finding myself with some rare down time during the pandemic, my goal was to complete the nursery area in the room that doubled as my home office. Using my own fabric and art designs along with some fun DIY projects, I achieved my goal of a delightful and workable nursery/office that brings a fresh twist to colorful, coastal charm.

I’m finally getting a chance to share pictures of the full space! I hope you enjoy and find some inspiration! I’ll link some of the DIY project tutorials below.

All of my office furniture is from Ikea.

To be honest, the shared space has worked well. Only caveat is that our son takes his naps in a pack-n-play in our bedroom, but other than that it has really worked out fine. In the future, we plan on having the kids share a bedroom…but we’re not quite there! haha!
